The Materialist

Posted on August 14, 2025August 14, 2025 by Didi

I made sure to tell Panget that I wanted to watch aMaterialist. Initially, I had no intention to watch it but, when I learned that Celine Song of Past Lives wrote and directed the movie. I became interested, I was determined to see it.

I still remember that night Panget and I watched Past Lives. After the ending, I found myself sitting still in tears. Panget went downstairs to do something and when he came back, he found me in the same state. The ending left me thinking about so many things. Ultimately it boils down to the choices we make in our lives. So I knew that Materialist being a Celine Song movie will make me think and realize things. I was prepared emotionally this time. Haha…

I’m not a fan of Dakota Johnson, I feel like her acting is sometimes too forced, plus her voice – it’s not the nicest sound to hear. But when she gets angry or to tries to be funny – I forget that I don’t like her, and instead I get more drawn. I guess that’s how she works her magic. Panget was very honest to say that he’s had enough of Pedro Pascal because man, he’s EVERYWHERE! (He will forever be Oberyn Martell, the guy who got his eyes crushed in GoT) His acting was really subdued and it was very still and controlled – but that’s how I guess his character is in the movie. I enjoyed the ‘dates’ and their conversations in the movie. Chris Evans though, for a change his character was not the ‘alpha’ and instead is from the bottom of the pile. I understood why he was cast, in Pinoy tv and movies – he was the typical Pinoy leading man, the handsome but financially challenged character which is an important arc in Pinoy love stories.

The movie is the classic tale of for love or for money in Celine Song fashion. Do you go for someone you love or someone who is practical that you can learn to love? I’ve read so many romance novels, heard so many love stories from real people on this. So many many people have shared life lessons on this, I’m sure you know this. Hahaha..

A match is a match – whether it be on paper or on feelings, a match is a match. The question is are they physically and emotionally attracted to one another? Are they compatible? It really boils down to what each person in the match can offer one another. Security? Love? Money? Connection? Attraction? The list can go on, but the bottom line is.. The heart wants what the heart wants.

People who are filled with wisdom will argue that one can teach the heart who to love but, I personally believe that one cannot tell the heart to beat for someone else when it’s already beating for a particular someone. I’ve heard it dozens of times ‘love cannot feed you’, ‘pakakainin ka ba ng love?‘, ‘choose well’, ‘marry well, love will come eventually’, and more.

But let’s be honest, marriage has always been a contract, a contract between two people with certain expectation on both ends. Nowadays, it’s just that people are more upfront and honest on their preferences because they don’t like surprises. Standards have been set based on what we see and experience in the real world. It’s not bad to want certain things in life, it certainly is never bad to want something more. We’ve all been taught to DREAM BIG, right?

We should never judge people on their chosen partnerships. Remember, it’s always mutually beneficial – one way or another.

Going back to the movie, I absolutely enjoyed the dialogue. I realized that I loved listening to what every character said. The words, the conversations, everything they said in the movie was good. I cannot explain how drawn I was with their conversations. If you haven’t seen the movie – watch it with an open mind and listen to the dialogue.

The ending may not be one that you like, but it’s one that Lucy liked, it’s the ending she chose for herself. We may question her choices, but that’s her. She has her reasons the same way, we have our reasons on the choices we’ve made.

Life is short to waste your time. Choose yourself ALWAYS.
